SwayamPaaka, June 4, 2014November 1, 2017

Tomato Onion chutney is quick and easy to make, yet it’s a delicious side dish for Idlis, Dosas, rotis, and much more. With just a few ingredients you, will have this finger licking chutney ready in minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 4 tomatoes (ಟೊಮಟೊ ಹಣ್ಣು)
  • 1 small onion cut into pieces (if you want, add garlic too) (ಈರುಳ್ಳಿ )
  • few curry leaves (ಕರಿಬೇವು)
  • 1 teaspoon jeera/cumin seeds (ಜೀರಿಗೆ )
  • 4 to 5 byadagi red chillies (ಬ್ಯಾಡಗಿ ಮೆಣಸಿನ ಕಾಯಿ )
  • 1 teaspoon salt ( ಉಪ್ಪು)
  • little jaggery or little tamarind, depending on sourness of tomato (ಬೆಲ್ಲ ಅಥವ ಹುಣಸೆ ಹಣ್ಣು)

For seasoning:

  • 3 tsp oil ( to fry tomato and also for seasoning ) ( ಎಣ್ಣೆ )
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds (ಸಾಸಿವೆ)
  • ¾ teaspoon urad dal ( ಉದ್ದಿನ ಬೇಳೆ)

To garnish:

  • Little bit of chopped cilantro/coriander leaves ( ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೊತ್ತಂಬರಿ ಸೊಪ್ಪು)

Method:

  1. Heat around 1½ tsp of oil in a pan on medium heat.
  2. Add jeera, then add red chillies. Once the the chillies are warm enough, take it out and keep it aside.
  3. Then add cut onions and sprinkle some salt. ( The salt helps cook the onion faster)
  4. Once the onions become translucent, add tomatoes.
  5. Add curry leaves, tamarind or jaggery, and turmeric powder.
  6. Mix and let the tomatoes cook well.
  7. After around ten minutes, or once the tomatoes are cooked well, turn off the heat and let it cool.
  8. Once it is cooled completely, grind this along with chillies and salt to a fine paste.
  9. Transfer it to a bowl and prepare the seasoning.

Seasoning:

  1. Heat the remaining oil in a ladle.
  2. Add mustard seeds and urad dal.
  3. Fry it until dal turns golden brown.
  4. Add this seasoning to the chutney and it is ready to serve!
