Split green gram, or moong dal, is packed with protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, making it an excellent choice for a healthy diet. It’s easy to digest and helps in detoxifying the body. Rava Moong dal upma, made with semolina, and green gram is a light yet filling breakfast option that provides sustained energy. By excluding onion and garlic, this dish becomes suitable for those following a sattvic diet, and it remains entirely vegan. Combining these elements in your breakfast ensures a nutritious and balanced start to your day, promoting overall well-being and sustained energy levels.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup roasted local rave /upma rave /coarse rava
  • (1 cup = 250ml)
  • 1/2 cup hesaru bele/moong dal / split green gram
  • 2 cups of water to cook the moong dal/bele
  • 3/4 cup water to cook rave
  • Chopped coriander leaves
  • juice of lemon or lime to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh coconut
  • 1/2 tbsp rock salt or salt to taste

For seasoning:

  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
  • ~finely chopped 6 green chilies or to your taste
  • few curry leaves
  • 1.5 tbsp grated ginger
  • 20 black pepper

Method:

Cooking the Dal:

  1. Wash the dal thoroughly.
  2. Cook the dal in 2 cups of water.
  3. Once the dal is almost cooked (3/4 done), turn off the heat.

Preparing Uppittu:

  1. Heat oil in a pan on medium heat.
  2. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds.
  3. After the mustard seeds pop, add jeera and let it sizzle.
  4. Add pepper and fry it.
  5. Add grated ginger, chopped chilies, curry leaves, and turmeric powder. Fry for a few seconds.
  6. Add roasted rava, mix well, and fry for a minute.
  7. Transfer this mixture to a plate.

Cooking the Uppittu:

  1. Return the pan to the stove.
  2. Add the remaining water, salt, and the water from the cooked dal to the pan. Allow it to boil.
  3. Once it starts to boil, add the rava mixture, stir well, and let the rava cook for a minute.
  4. Add the cooked dal to the cooked rava, mix well.
  5. Cover the pan, reduce the heat, and let it cook on low heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Once the uppittu is ready, mix it well.
  7. Turn off the heat.
  8. Add chopped coriander leaves, coconut, and lemon juice. Mix everything thoroughly.
  9. Serve the moong dal upma!
