Bengal Gram tambuli | Kala chana thambuli

Brown bengal gram / kala chana / black chickpeas are high fiber, high protein, low glycemic index beans. Here is healthy and delicious tambuli recipe using soaked raw chana / kadale kaaLu.

Ingredients for making bengal gram tambuli:

  • 2 tbsp kadale kaaLu / Kala Chana / Bengal Gram
  • Wash and soak the kadale kalu overnight or at least 4 to5 hours
  • 1/2 tsp salt or salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp fresh grated coconut
  • 1/2 cup preferably sour yogurt/curd
  • 1 cup water ( to soak the kaaLu and for grinding)

For masala:

  • ¼ tsp ghee
  • 1 green chilli
  • 10 black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp jeera / cumin seeds

For seasoning:

  • ½ tsp ghee
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp jeera / cumin seeds
  • 3 to 4 pieces of broken red chilli

Method:

  1. Heat 1/4 tsp ghee in a ladle on medium low heat, once hot add pepper, then add jeera and cut green chilli. after the jeera sputters turn off the heat.
  2. Transfer some water from soaked kalu , then grind the chana along with coconut, fried ingredients, and salt without adding water first
  3. Now add yogurt /curd and grind it to a fine paste. Transfer the tambli to a bowl
  4. Put some water to the mixer jar to rinse and then add that to the tambuli

Seasoning:

  1. Heat remaining ghee in ladle on medium low heat, once hot add mustard seeds, after it pops add jeera, after it sputters add red chilli pieces and turn off the heat
  2. Add the seasoning to the prepared tambuli. Mix it well and serve the tambuli with rice or as side dish.
