Cabbage chutney is very easy to make, a tasty and healthy side dish for rotti, rice, chapathi and dosas as well.
Research says cabbage when steam cooked helps to reduce cholesterol. Also rich in Vitamin K, and sulfur. It is a good source of fiber and vitamin C as well.
Almost every breakfasts calls for a chutney to go with, hence we need variety chutney recipes. Cabbage chutney is another addition to our side dishes. It is very delicious, easy to make and healthy chutney one must try.

Ingredients for Cabbage Chutney :
- ~1 cup finely chopped cabbage | ele kosu
- 2 tsp cooking oil ( to cook the cabbage)
- 1 tsp cooking oil for the seasoning
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/8 tsp hing
- 1/2 tsp uddina bele / urad dal/ split black gram
- 1 red chili
- few curry leaves
- 6+/- green chilies
- 1/2 tsp uddina bele / urad dal/ split black gram
- 3/4 cup grated coconut
- coriander leaves
- marble sized tamarind(wash and soak in water)
- 1 tsp rock salt or salt to taste
- ~2 tbsp water(if needed)
Method:
- Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan, dal, fry it until the dal turns golden brown
- Add green chilis, fry it for few seconds and then add coriander leaves
- Add cabbage, fry it until the raw smell disappears
- Then turn off the heat, add coconut. Mix it
- Grind cooked cabbage along with salt, and tamarind extract to a coarse consistency ( add water if needed)
- Transfer the chutney to a bowl
For seasoning:
- Heat a tsp of oil in a ladle on medium heat,
- Once hot add mustard seeds, after it pops add black gram dal, and hing
- After the dals turn golden brown add red chili pieces and curry leaves
- Fry for few seconds, turn off the heat and add the seasoning to the chutney.
- Mix it and serve with rice, chapathi, rotti ,,,
